It is well known that fouling by mussels, barnacles and other organisms which attach to immersed surfaces is an expensive and challenging problem. Marine vessels attract these organisms to their under water surfaces, increasing drag, fuel consumption and the necessity for significant downtime and increased maintenance expense.
Developing a coating that resists fouling, but does not pose a risk to the environment or human health is very challenging. Until recently, one alternative approach to this problem relied on anti-fouling coatings containing biocides (poisons) applied to the surfaces in order to kill the marine growth. Unfortunately, all such coatings are toxic and recent legislation issued by International Marine Organization (IMO) has established that use of such coatings containing Tributyltin will be prohibited starting September 2008. In addition, other coatings formulations containing Copper are under increased regulatory scrutiny.
FUJIFILM Hunt Smart Surfaces, LLC now offers its DUPLEX fouling release system technology as an effective and environmentally friendly alternative. The DUPLEX solution is a U.S. Navy patented non-toxic system that causes marine organisms to release from it's silicone-based coated surface. DUPLEX was specifically formulated for use on marine vessels and has proved effective to reduce fuel and maintenance costs. The longevity of the DUPLEX system is 5 years or greater depending on operational tempo. The coating has proven to provide vessels with optimal hydrodynamic efficiency throughout the life of the coating. Our DUPLEX solution will work toward saving the environment and your budget.
Not all fouling release technologies are created equal. Conventional systems can be vulnerable to wear and tear from debris in water or from contact with other structures. The DUPLEX system is proven to be more durable than other fouling release coatings, providing steady long-term performance. In addition, our DUPLEX Tie Coat formula incorporates nano technology for unique synergy of four layers - two epoxy anti-corrosion layers and a tough protective silicone topcoat, all of which are effectively interlocked by a unique thermoplastic elastomeric tie coat layer that forms a molecular covalent bond. The synergy among the four coats creates superior adhesion. Specific Dry Film Thickness (DFT) of the system layers are as follows:
This patented solution unites durability, longevity, clean-ability, and cost-effectiveness in a single product.
Our DUPLEX system offers:
Our nontoxic solution is a patented, resilient, effective silicone-based coating. The Smart Surfaces DUPLEX foulant release technology causes organisms to be released from surfaces even at slower speeds and lighter water pressure – a solution that works with Nature, not against it.

The Smart Surfaces DUPLEX Fouling Release Coating System provides a remarkably effective, nontoxic alternative to conventional antifouling technologies. And the need has never been more urgent – for the environment, as well as for operational efficiency.
This U.S. Navy patented solution unites durability, longevity, clean-ability, repair-ability and cost-effectiveness in a single product. Finally, superior biofouling protection is compatible with superior environmental protection.
The DUPLEX tie formula incorporating nano technology is a unique synergy of three layers. An epoxy anti-corrosion layer and a tough, protective silicone topcoat are effectively interlocked by a unique thermoplastic elastomeric tie formula.
The synergy among the three creates superior adhesion and durability. This technology boosts the toughness and adhesion properties of the epoxy and silicone coatings, creating a new system that is durable and long lasting.
