Dan Westergren

Photographer's Bio

Dan Westergren, Director of Photography for National Geographic Travel is based in Washington DC where he spends his days looking at pictures of some of the most beautiful places in the world. Since picking up a camera in the 8th grade he has been fascinated with photography and the way photographers create objects of beauty from the world at large. He has turned this fascination into a lifetime obsession of constantly photographing everything around him. He's been lucky to photograph for the pages of National Geographic Traveler amazing places like the summit of Mt. Blanc and the North Pole. But often his subjects are just the neighborhood dogs or his kids, who he will drag to the Potomac river and make them stand waist deep in the cold water waiting for the light to be "just right." He is also an experienced teacher, having led workshops for National Geographic Expeditions in Santa Fe, Tuscany, Baja, Antarctica, The Arctic Ocean, Washington DC, and the Galapagos Islands.

Photographer's Testimonial

I have always been a fan of using small, unobtrusive cameras in my photographic work. When the photo world switched to digital photography, my quest to replace small film cameras became very difficult and I resigned myself to carrying huge cameras around the world to do my work. FUJIFILM’s X series of cameras has changed my thinking and once again I can carry less and move faster with these amazing small cameras.

While Hiking in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, I was surprised by this amazing, post-sunset light at the Lakes of the Clouds Hut. I grabbed the FUJIFILM X-Pro1 and sprinted up the trail, hoping to find an interesting overall scene that would depict the feeling of peace I had in this place. I got to this overlook just in time to find an Appalachian Trail through-hiker looking down at the scene of his well deserved rest. ISO 400, f/2.8 at 1/75, WB Auto.

At Iceland’s Seljalandsfoss, one of the countless, amazing waterfalls to be found there, the FUJIFILM X-Pro1 with 14mm lens was the perfect tool. I was able to capture these young boy’s futile attempt to stay dry near the raging torrent. The incredible sharpness of the lens shows off the beauty of the cliff and the X-Trans CMOS sensor gave me the necessary dynamic range to show both the white water and amazing color of the cliff under the falls. ISO 800, f/5.6 at 1/180, WB Auto.

When I woke on this February morning at Yellowstone National Park’s Upper Geyser Basin, I was shocked to see that the temperature was 36 degrees below zero fahrenheit. But, I only had that one morning there to get my photos, so I headed out into the cold. After wandering around for a couple hours I found this frost covered bison just stirring with the morning sun. I was very happy that the FUJIFILM X-Pro1 wasn’t phased by the cold weather and I was able to capture this view with FUJIFILM's 55-200mm zoom lens. ISO 320, f/4.2 at 1/2856, WB Auto.

On a dogsled trip in Montana I was struck by the beauty of the Inuit dogs that were pulling our sleds. I had the 35mm lens mounted on my FUJIFILM
X-Pro1 in order to capture a portrait of this dog, with his wonderful symmetric markings. The autofocus worked perfectly to capture the gleam in his eye. ISO 400, f/2.8 at 1/1250, WB Auto.

Photographer's Bio

I’m Andrew Tomasino, a portrait, and street photographer. In 2014, I traveled the globe making images in China, Dubai, Paris, London, and New York. I’m amazed by the world around me, and my favorite tool to capture that feeling is with a camera. I absolutely love seeing light in everyday life, and sharing intimate moments with my subjects.

The most alive I feel is when I’m behind a camera. Whether it’s on a street, or during a portrait session, there is simply nothing like photographing.

A total game changer. Going from the X100 to the X-Pro1 was the blending of power I wanted from the X100, now backed with a line of lenses that I could stand behind. I must be honest, I used the 18-55mm F2.8-4 for most of the images I've created. Some would call that a “kit” lens … I’d call it a beast. Super sharp, and with the built in OIS technology I can make images at much slower shutter speeds than expected.
