The FUJIFILM X100S has brought new inspiration to my shooting, and that is about the best thing I can say for any camera. What strikes you first about the X100S is the design. It is retro and beautiful….simplicity of form and function at its best. But then you start shooting with it and realize just how capable it is. The image quality is nothing less than stellar. I’ve been a RAW shooter for as long as I can remember and yet I am finding that the JPEGS are excellent, and high enough quality for the pickiest client. I love the fixed 35 mm equivalent F 2 lens…it’s tack sharp and fast. And the hybrid viewfinder really allows me to move quickly through different shooting situations with ease. But really, it comes down to ease, comfort, and just plain FUN. This camera brings out the kid in me, and has reinvigorated my love of photography. I never leave home without it, no matter where I am going.

I am usually not much of a fan on in-camera panorama functions, as they don’t typically work very well. However, I have been pleasantly surprised by the X100S and it’s ability to stitch the images in-camera beautifully. ISO 800, f / 16 at 1/150, WB Auto. Exposure Mode: Manual, Metering Mode: Pattern

I took the X100S as a backup on my recent Southwest (Utah and Arizona) photo tour. When my big DSLR was stuck on a tripod waiting for the right light, it was the X100S that allowed me to move freely and play like a kid again. The images it produced were some of my favorite from the entire trip. ISO 200, f / 5.6 at 1/320, WB Auto. Exposure Mode: Manual, Metering Mode: Pattern

While at the infamously beautiful permit area known as The Wave (at the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument), the X100S gave me the freedom to play with many different angles and views. For this image, I was almost laying down, something that would have been hard with a big DSLR. ISO 200, f / 8 at 1/1000, WB Auto. Exposure Mode: Manual, Metering Mode: Pattern

As I mentioned, the image quality is just outstanding. This image, of House on Fire, would print beautifully. ISO 800, f / 16 at 1/40, WB Auto. Exposure Mode: Manual, Metering Mode: Pattern

The iconic Delicate Arch, in Arches National Park in southern Utah, is a really fun place for sunset shots. It’s a decent uphill hike to get here, but the small size of the X100S really helps lighten the load. ISO 800, f / 11 at 1/50, WB Auto. Exposure Mode: Manual, Metering Mode: Pattern

If you shoot the sunrise at Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park, you will most likely be shoulder to shoulder with other photographers. My suggestion? Set your tripod up to save your place for the sunrise, take your X100S out of your bag and walk around and get some great images. And don’t be surprised if they are your favorite shots of the day! ISO 800, f / 16 at 1/40, WB Auto. Exposure Mode: Manual, Metering Mode: Pattern

Valerie Jardin

Photographer's Bio

Photography changed my life forever. The day I picked up a camera I became a storyteller. Photography is my passion, my obsession, my addiction. I live and breathe in pixels!

My passion for humankind drives me to shoot mostly street photography. I thrive on searching and waiting for just the right moment when a story unfolds in a single frame. I also look to shoot the extraordinary in the ordinary - it's in the details. I've learned to see when I look, to find beauty everywhere. Although I love wandering the streets of large cities, the natural world around me always amazes me. I feel so privileged to see it all through my lens.

After working as a commercial photographer for 14 years, I am now devoting my time and energy to educate others. Teaching is my opportunity to share my passion and skills with others while leading international photography workshops. I also give talks and presentations at photo conferences.

I also share my passion for photography by writing articles. I'm a writer for Australian-based dPS magazine and the host of my very own street photography weekly podcast Street Focus.

I fell in love with the X100S when it came out and never looked back. The gear should never get in the way and this little camera has simply become an extension of my vision.

Born and raised in France, I currently live in Minnesota, USA.
