Introducing hardware-software combination to make more precise monitor correction available to a much wider audience
VALHALLA, N.Y., August 19, 2013 – FUJIFILM North America Corporation and SpectraCal, Inc. announced today a strategic joint initiative to expand the usability of precise monitor correction solutions for the professional video production and post-production industries using Fujifilm’s IS-mini image processor and SpectraCal’s CalMAN Studio software. Fujifilm’s engineers worked closely with SpectraCal’s engineers to utilize its innovations and help make the IS-mini’s power available to a much wider market.
The Fujifilm IS-mini’s software monitor calibration function brings a new level of automation to end users without needing vast technical knowledge; but the collaboration of IS-mini and CalMAN expands the IS-mini’s operation to any probe type that CalMAN supports along with more detailed reporting functionality. A new version of CalMAN Studio now directly controls Fujifilm’s new IS-mini to create a Color Cube (generally known as a 3D LUT) to correct video signals. Movie and television production professionals use the Color Cube to make extremely precise color adjustments to video reference monitors. Color Cube correction has previously required tools many times more expensive than the IS-mini and CalMAN Studio.
“While the IS-mini was originally created as one piece of a larger color management solution, working with SpectraCal helped us increase its potential, and opened up the IS-Mini’s power to every industry professional who absolutely depends on the image fidelity of their monitors,” said Michael Bulbenko, marketing and sales development manager, FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Imaging Division.
Colorists and others in production who need to know that monitors are displaying the exact colors specified by industry standards use Color Cubes to make more precise corrections than the monitors’ built-in controls allow.
“Color Cubes let you iron out any non-linear behaviors in the display, so that you know you can trust it at every luminance and color saturation level,” said Derek Smith, founder and CTO, SpectraCal.
SpectraCal’s software measures numerous points in a color space and creates a Color Cube that brings the monitor as close to the specified standard as possible, then checks the applied result and provides a comprehensive report on the monitor’s accuracy. The report can be printed out or managed in a database of monitor performance.
IS-mini support is available as part of CalMAN Studio 5.2. To download CalMAN for evaluation, please go to: http://studio.spectracal.com/support/downloads.html.
